Virgil van Dijk offered to Real Madrid on a free transfer


Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk’s representatives have reportedly offered the Dutchman’s services to Real Madrid as he nears the end of his contract at Anfield.

Now in the final six months of his contract, Van Dijk is one of three high-profile players of major concern for Liverpool as their contracts expire. Mohamed Salah continues to put enormous public pressure on the Redswhile right back Trent Alexander-Arnold is Real Madrid’s main target for the summer transfer window.

According to RelevoMadrid also got the chance to grab Van Dijk. The 33-year-old’s agents are said to have discussed a major free transfer, aware that Madrid are looking to strengthen their defence.

It is claimed that Van Dijk was ready to leave for the Santiago Bernabeu when the offer came in, but Madrid officials ultimately rejected the proposal.

Although obviously aware of Van Dijk’s quality, Madrid felt that the Dutch international was too old for their plansinstead he prefers to look for a younger central defender capable of leading the team for the next decade.

It is unclear when this proposal was made. Van Dijk was publicly asked about the transfer to Madrid when confronted with his Liverpool foreign in November 2024, but he was be quick to dismiss the guesswork.

Liverpool are now believed to be growing in confidence about their chances of securing Van Dijk’s future with a new deal, but doubts remain over Alexander-Arnold after Madrid tried to fast-track their plans with January offer for the Englishman.
