Trump signs Laken Riley Law as the first legislative victory in a new administration

President Donald Trump Signed the Laken Riley Law on Wednesday, marking the first law to become a law in its second administration.

The measure, which has progressed through the home and the Senate in January, directs immigration and customs implementation (ICE) to detention of illegal immigrants arrested or charged with crimes associated with theft, or those accused of attacking a police officer.

The law also allows states to sue the Ministry of Internal Security for the damage done to its citizens for illegal immigration.

The name of the law pays tribute to a nursing student who is a illegal immigrant killed while running at the Georgia University campus. Jose Ibarra, who was previously arrested but never closed him, was sentenced to prison for the murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley.

The measure received the support of all Republicans and 48 Democrats, and all Republicans in Senate and 12 Democrats of Senate.

In the meantime, the critics of these measures claim that the law will implement the path to mass detention, including those who committed minor offenses such as theft.

Sarah Mehta, Senior Border Policy Advisor with US Union for Civic Freedom, said in a statement after the Senate voted to improve the measure on the eve of the final vote: “This is an extreme and reactive proposal of the law that will approve the greatest expansion of the mandatory custody I have seen in me in me for decades. ”

“Although we are disappointed, this bill will adopt the Senate, it is noticeable that so many senators have opposed and acknowledged the need for the real reform of immigration – not chaos and cruelty that this legislature will release,” Mehta said.

Trump promised to break illegal immigration during his campaign, and declared a national emergency on the southern border after his inauguration. He also immediately ordered the expulsion of migrants without asylum options.

On Tuesday, the print secretary of the Caroline Leavitt White House warned the foreign citizens, thinking of entering the US that they would be detained and expelled from the country.

“So, foreign nationals who think about trying to enter the United States illegally, think again,” Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday at a printing house in the White House. “Under this president, you will be detained and you will be deported. Every day, Americans are safer because of the violent criminals that the administration of President Trump removes from our communities.”
