Trump rescinds Biden’s order authorizing transgender troops in attempt to rid DEI of military
President Donald Trump revoked a Biden-era order allowing transgender people to serve in the military.
After being sworn in on Monday, the new president signed an order dismissing the former president Joe Biden order known as Allowing All Qualified Americans to Serve Their Country in Uniform, which was signed in 2021.
During the campaign, Trump promised to roll back the ban on transgender troops that he put in place during his first term. In his inaugural speech, he said that he would formally recognize that there are only two sexes: male and female.
It is estimated that there are between 9,000 and 14,000 transgender members of the military.
The new executive order was part of a rapid series of moves by Trump to reverse Biden’s policies. In a statement, the White House called out diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the federal government for “corrupting them by replacing hard work, merit and equity with a divisive and dangerous preference hierarchy.”

The move comes as part of a campaign launched by Trump and his nominee for secretary of defense Pete Hegseth to root out any DEI practices in US forces.
Last week, Trump selected Matthew Lohmeier to be the next undersecretary of the Air Force. Lohmeier is in 2021. space force lieutenant colonel, he was fired after calling out the military’s diversity programs and alleged “Marxism” in its ranks.
Lohmeier has self-published a book, “Irresistible Revolution: Marxism’s Aim to Conquer and Destroy America’s Military,” and has appeared on podcasts arguing that the military has been weakened by Marxism, diversity efforts, and critical race theory.

Tail. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, praised the move, “which is already returning our military’s focus to lethality by putting an end to the wake-up DEI programs.”

Monday’s actions are part of a broader Republican campaign against of transgenders within the army. GOP lawmakers successfully included an amendment in their 2025 defense policy bill that would ban irreversible transgender care for minors in the military health care system.

An order requiring the federal government to recognize only two genders has banned the use of taxpayer money for “transgender services” after reports that some inmates were receiving government-funded transgender care. Medicaid, in some states, currently covers such treatments.
Also, according to that order, federal prisons and shelters for migrants and rape victims must be segregated by biological sex. It would block requests in government institutions and workplaces to refer to transgender people by gender-appropriate pronouns. Trump’s team says the requests violate the First Amendment’s freedom of speech and religion.

The order does not issue a nationwide mandate to which bathrooms can transgender people use or in which sports competitions they can participate, although many states have enacted laws in these areas.
