Travis Kelce refuses to talk about fines against Texans for hitting Patrick Mahomes as fans rage
National outrage over questionable penalties called during the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff game against the Houston Texans has reached Travis Kelce podcast on Wednesday, but stayed out of the discussion.
After NFL referees called two roughing penalties for passing after touchdowns Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during Saturday’s divisional game, Texans players and head coach DeMeco Ryans suggested the officials were siding with Kansas City. Many fans expressed their displeasure at the questionable penalties on social media.
Kelce and his brother Jason read some of the angry tweets during Wednesday’s episode of their “New Heights” podcast, but Travis declined to talk about it.
“I’d like to make a statement on the Fifth,” the tight end said, joking about his constitutional right to remain silent.

Jason described one of the penalties as “absolutely, absolutely ridiculous”.
“He didn’t even touch it,” Jason said. “I understand why they called it. I just think it was a bad call.”
Travis is one of the few people keeping quiet about it as penalties have been among the most talked about topics in football this past week.
Mahomes has been ever since repeatedly defended the referees for penalties. On Wednesday, reporters asked the defender if he believed the referees were giving him preferential treatment.
“I don’t feel that way,” Mahomes replied. “At the end of the day, the umpires do their best to call the game as fair and as fair as they can. And all you can do is go out there and play the game you love as hard as you can and live with the results. … I think it’s that’s what we preach here in Kansas City.

“Every year you get new referees, new circumstances and you never know because every game is different. And that’s what makes the NFL so special. I feel like I’ve continued to play the game and just try to win and whatever happens, happen.”
Mahomes defended the referees during a radio interview on 96.5 The Fan on Tuesday.
“I’ve kind of learned that no matter what happens during the game, something will come out if you win and keep winning. So I don’t pay attention to that,” Mahomes said.

“I mean, obviously, I’ve been on both sides of how I thought the calls were made, but, at the end of the day, man, those guys are doing their best to make the best calls and keep where the players are playing in the game.
“And that’s what decides the outcome. And obviously there was a call here or there that people didn’t agree with, but, at the same time, I think there were a lot of other plays that really decided the outcome of that football game.”
Referee Clay Martin explained the calls to a pool reporter after the game, saying one of the controversial calls was the result of “violent contact with the facemask area,” which warranted a flag. He said there was forced contact with Mahomes’ “haircut” on another unnecessary roughing call.
