Tottenham midfielder Bentancur out for two weeks but ‘fine’

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will be out for two weeks after suffering concussion during the EFL Cup semi-final first leg win against Liverpool.

Bentancur fell awkwardly when attempting a header in the corner and the game was delayed while he was treated on the pitch.

He was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and was under observation in hospital, but manager Ange Postecoglou says he will be fine to return after a spell on the side.

“It looks like a concussion, but nothing more than that. He’s been in hospital, obviously, and they’ve done all the tests in terms of checking, to make sure everything’s OK,” Postecoglou said ahead of his side’s FA Cup third-round clash against non-league side Tamworth.

“And all good. He returned home. He is fine. He feels good.

“Now we will obviously follow the protocols. I think it’s a couple of weeks where you have to make sure everything is fine.”

Bentancur will miss next week’s Premier League trip to rivals Arsenal and the clash against Everton, but could return for the Europa League game against Hoffenheim on January 23.

“It was upsetting but I thought the lads handled it well and our medical team dealt with it well and, as I said, luckily everything was fine,” Postecoglou added.

Tottenham have not won the FA Cup since 1991.
