Tottenham 1-2 Leicester
Spurs slumped to a fourth straight defeat in the Premier League as lowly Leicester battled for their first win in nine games at a riotous Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
The home fans directed ‘we want Levy out’ chants at watching chairman Daniel Levy as Ange Postecoglou’s injured side conceded twice in four minutes just after half-time. They then booed at the final whistle as Spurs’ dismal season took another dip.
The hosts took the lead thanks to Richarlison’s first-half header from Pedro Porro’s cross, but Jamie Vardy leveled after Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s low cross just 57 seconds after the break.
The hosts were surprised by the equalizer and conceded what proved to be the decisive goal when they pulled back and allowed Bilal El Khannouss to find the bottom corner from outside the box.
Spurs came into the game having enjoyed a respite from their poor Premier League form with a Europa League win at Hoffenheim, but it came at a cost, with James Maddison joining their injury list in double digits due to “soreness” from that game.
Richarlison’s strike put them in front at half-time, but Leicester mercilessly exposed their defensive vulnerabilities, with Vardy and El Khannouss turning the game on its head in front of a delirious traveling crowd, whose celebrations contrasted with the displeasure of the home fans.
Spurs tried to rally and Porro hit the crossbar with a deflected free-kick, but they otherwise lacked ideas in the latter stages, with Heung-Min Son twice denied by Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk in the first half.
The defeat extends their winless run to seven games in the Premier League, deepening the sense of crisis at the club and keeping them in 15th place in the table. Meanwhile, Leicester climbed out of the relegation zone to 17th place.
Levy was the main target of the home fans’ ire, but there were also boos at Postecoglou’s decision to withdraw marksman Richarlison, although the Spurs boss later explained that the striker was “feeling his groin” after only recently returning from injury.
