The Man City star has reacted to Kyle Walker’s transfer request
Manchester City defender Nathan Ake was surprised to learn of Kyle Walker’s desire to leave at the Etihad Stadium, admitting his team-mate’s departure would have a “huge” impact on the team.
Pep Guardiola announced the news on Walker’s intention to move abroad for the final years of his career after City beat Salford City 8-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday night.
The defending Premier League champions fielded a youthful line-up for the third round match, with Ake the only senior center back at the start. Walker was conspicuous by his absence, with Guardiola later explaining: “I prefer to play against other players whose minds are here.”
Ake was taken aback when presented with his manager’s comments after the gameregaining his composure before praising his “legend” teammate. “He’s huge for us,” the Dutch defender told reporters, “he’s been huge for us over the years. And this year, he’s a big character in the team. He deserves a lot of praise for all the years he’s been a top player for this club.”
Walker has routinely captained City this season and Ake was asked about the Englishman’s leadership qualities. “It’s huge,” admitted the 29-year-old. “He’s a big player for us, a big character. A good lad too, I’m very good with him. Let’s see what happens. There’s no doubt he’s been a massive player for us.”
City they are ready to add some defensive players in the January transfer window. Lens central defender Abdukodir Khusanov is at his peak agreed a deal worth £33.6 million while Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis could also be on the way to East Manchester.
The news of Walker’s departure may have come as a shock, but Ake had faith in City’s recruitment department. “The club knows what it’s doing,” he insisted. “They’re trying to help the team and they’re trying to get us back where we belong. Hopefully, if that happens, it’ll be good.”
