The Everton boss has ‘no idea’ if the owners have spoken to other managers following the reported talks with Potter

Sean Dyche says he has no idea whether Everton’s new owners have spoken to other candidates about his successor.

Recent reports suggest that the Toffees’ new owners, the Friedkin Group, are considering Dyche’s position after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth left them just a point above the relegation zone.

The Toffees have already sought replacements for the 53-year-old, with suggestions that former Chelsea boss Graham Potter has held talks with both the Merseyside club and West Ham.

Facing the media ahead of Thursday’s FA Cup third-round tie with Peterborough, Dyche insists he accepts the owners will have a succession plan.

He said: “It should be [at a club that you are looking to the future]. If you are a club of this size, a succession plan should be part of their due diligence.

“I have no problem with that, it should be in every football club. It’s part of the job.

“I never deal with it. You have to win games, we haven’t won enough this season. You have to please everyone all the time, it’s a job and it’s on me without any doubt.

“We had positive talks, they know the work we have done and they want better results by winning games. The situation is real, that’s all I know, they were very honest with me and very open about it.

“Whether they talked to other managers or not, they certainly didn’t tell me. I don’t know how that works in the privacy world of it all, but if they do, it’s succession planning.

“It’s also a business, I fully understand that, whoever it is, it should be part of the way every company works.”

Dyche: I’m just a keeper at Everton

Everton’s poor form has reportedly prompted their owners to reconsider Dyche’s future after initially looking to keep him on board to stabilize the ship until the summer.

He added: “We are still investing a lot. I put a lot of effort into trying different ways, trying to look at all the different parameters.

“It’s part of the manager’s job, I’m well versed in that. It is difficult and it was extremely difficult here, I spoke about it openly.

“There’s a lot of demand here, a lot of demand for me and it’s a constant. It’s part of life at Everton. I adapted to it. I’ve had my bumps and I’m getting them again. I went through it. It’s about how you deal with it.

“The club is always bigger than me, I look at it like I’m just a keeper. I’ve dealt with it pretty well so far, I think now it’s about trying to win some games and change the story.”

Dyche responds to Carragher criticism

Everton’s poor form was discussed on Sky Sport’s Monday Night Football this week, with Jamie Carragher highlighting their problems in scoring from open play.

The former Liverpool defender noted that the Toffees had scored just 26 such goals since the start of last season, 17th overall in the league.

Dyche said: “I take responsibility for everything. I don’t need to watch TV [to get statistics]we have a department here,” he said.

“Someone sent it to me and I thought Carra was very fair. We are like a team from the 90s. Dynamics and strength in the game to score goals, but also resistance.

“We know the statistics and the facts, we know they need to be corrected. It is a constant work in progress. We are constantly looking at the players we have and how we can use them in different roles. We look at changes and how we can become better.”

Everton’s transfer plans

Dyche was also asked if their new owners would support the club in the January transfer market.

Everton have already been linked with Aston Villa winger Jaden Philogene, who the Toffees tried to sign in the summer before the winger decided to return to Villa Park.

The Toffees manager said Merseyside have suggested they will be active in the transfer market, saying: “There are people working very hard, like me, to get it right. If we can work the market, we will.

“I know my job and responsibility. We haven’t won enough games and that has to change.”
