The BCCI is mulling Gambhir’s future as the head coach of the Indian team

Gautam Gambhir maybe walking on thin ice like Team India head coach. Reports suggest that the BCCI is seriously considering changes if the team does not recover soon. India’s unsatisfactory streak in progress Granica-Gavaskar Trophy he had already set the alarm bells.

India, led Rohit Sharmalosing 1-2 in the five-test series against Australia. The series was tough, especially for the top batsmen, whose struggles were evident. With only one test remaining i Champions trophy around the corner, the pressure rises.

“If things don’t improve soon, even Gambhir’s position will not be secure,” Sr BCCI officially revealed.

A tough start to Gambhir’s coaching tenure

This Australian tour is Gambhir’s first big challenge as a head coach, and it hasn’t gone according to plan so far. The winning team Australia in their last two visits now looks far from the best.

Gambhir’s style of constant experimentation with the playing XI has also left some players uneasy. While gambles like Nitish Reddy’s have worked, his treatment of others like Shubman Gill has been criticised.

“Some players feel insecure about their places. It doesn’t help the morale of the team,” the source added.

Changes in the BCCI add to the uncertainty

Things are also complicated at the administrative level. With Jay Shah moving to the ICC as president, the BCCI is in for a bit of a shakeup. His replacement will not take office until after January 12, leaving the Board without a clear direction for now.

Roger Binny, the current BCCI president, kept himself out of big decisions, which didn’t help matters. The leadership uncertainty makes the situation with Gambhir even more complicated.

Not the first choice, but the only option?

When Gambhir was appointed as head coach after T20 World Cup 2024was not the first choice of the Committee. VVS Laxman was initially preferred but scheduling conflicts and lack of interest from international names made Gambhir the default choice.

“He was not the first choice, but certain situations led to his appointment,” the official explained.

Since taking over, Gambhir’s success hasn’t been great. India lost the series against Sri Lanka, New Zealandand now he is fighting in Australia. Many feel that his expertise is better suited to T20 cricket, where he excels both as a captain and as a mentor.

Kohli’s struggles—an open issue

One of the biggest criticisms against Gambhir has been his inability to address Virat Kohli ongoing struggles outside the stumps. Kohli’s dismissals in that channel have been a recurring problem, but no concrete solution has emerged.

“Gambhir knows what’s wrong – he’s seen it as a player and a coach. If he knows, why didn’t he fix it?” asked the former Indian cricketer with more than 90 Tests to his name.
