Tesla is voluntarily recalling about 239,000 of its electric vehicles in the U.S. to fix a problem that can cause their rear cameras to malfunction, the company said in sawdust posted Friday on the National Transportation Safety Administration’s website.

“A rearview camera that does not display an image reduces the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash,” Tesla wrote in a letter to regulators. The recall applies to Tesla sedans Model 3 and Model S from 2024-2025, and SUVs Model X and Model Y from 2023-2025.

The company also said in letter of thanks that it has already “released an over-the-air (OTA) software update” that may fix some issues with the vehicle’s cameras.

In 2024, Tesla issued 16 recalls in the US affecting 5.14 million of its electric vehicles, according to NHTSA data. Remedies for the recall included a combination of over-the-air software updates and part replacements. More than 40% of last year’s recalls were related to problems with the latest vehicle in the company’s lineup, the Cybertruck, an angular steel pickup truck that Tesla has begun delivering to customers at the end of 2023.

As for the latest recall, the company said it has received 887 warranty claims and dozens of field reports, but told NHTSA that it is not aware of any injuries, fatalities or other crashes that have resulted from a reversing camera failure.

Other customers with vehicles that have “experienced a circuit board failure or stress that could lead to circuit board failure,” causing backup cameras to fail, can have their vehicles’ computers replaced by Tesla for free, the company said.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
