Sunil Gavaskar questions Rohit Sharma’s Test future in a brutal attack

The great batsman Sunil Gavaskar spoke about the future of India’s captaincy Rohit Sharma in Tests. He asked Rohit if he gave another chance to a player who played like him in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Since the last few months, Rohit Sharma’s Test career is witnessing a major decline. This is because the captain of the Indian national cricket team has failedo set the stage on fire and struggled to even reach double figures, which speaks volumes for his poor form.

Rohit Sharma failed to start the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rohit also failed to start the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian cricket team captain has looked terrible with the bat since joining the team in the second match series in Adelaide. He batted in the middle order for two games but failed and then improved.

After that, he opened the innings in the fourth test, but the same fate followed. This eventually prompted Indian national cricket team captain Rohit to accept a call-up for the team as he signed himself out for the last match of the series. In Tests against Australiahe scored just 31 runs at a miserable average of 6.20.

Would you give another chance to a player who performed like this? – Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma

Sunil Gavaskar has addressed the Rohit Sharma situation, saying if the selectors want to give the captain another chance because of what he has done, that will be a different matter. But he asked if any other player would get the same treatment. Speaking to Star Sports, he said:

“If he was a selector, and you as a captain have no right to vote but are a co-opted member of the selection committee, would he give another chance to a player who performed like this? If you say yes, he would give another chance to such a player, then it’s different”

If some other player had so many failures, three test matches against New Zealand and three test matches here, then he would tell you that you want to select him, that is different, otherwise the matter is clear before the selection committee.”

Another thing is about age – Sunil Gavaskar is not sure that Rohit Sharma will play till 2027.

Sunil Gavaskar further highlighted the age factor, saying that players in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli let that not go to their hands either. He believes that if the seniors are not ready by the next WTC final, then they should not be playing in England. He added:

“It’s another thing about age. It’s different if someone is 25 or 26. Whatever I said before, it’s not about Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli or (Ravichandran) Ashwin; I’m saying the next Test World Cup will start the cycle in June, it will be a series in England.”

So when the final is two years from now in June 2027, will all those players be available for it? By available I mean whether they will be ready to play, whether they will be ready in terms of performance. If not, I’d say we start all over again with the England series.”
