Sunil Gavaskar lashes out at Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff on live TV, demands public shaming after BGT disaster
Batsman great Sunil Gavaskar did not shy away from attacking the coaching staff of the Indian national cricket team after their 3-1 series defeat against the Australian national cricket team. He said they should be asked questions about their performance and their future for England.
India’s national cricket team has finally crashed out of the race for the finals of the ICC Test World Cup. This came after the Rohit Sharma-led team suffered a disastrous 3-1 defeat in the five-match Test series against the Australian national cricket team and also the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years.
Poor batting was the main reason behind India’s poor performance in Australia
One of the main reasons for the poor performance of the Indian national cricket team throughout the series was poor batting. The batsmen failed to play consistently throughout the series and if that had happened, the result would certainly have been different.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was the top scorer for the team and KL Rahul started the series well but failed to finish well. The rest of the batsmen have looked awful throughout the series and this has led to the players, along with the coaching staff, facing a lot of criticism for their poor efforts.
“What did your coaching staff do? – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar also launched an attack on the coaching staff of the Indian cricket team. He questioned the Gautam Gambhir-led staff for their handling of the batsmen, pointing out that the batting looked worse at home in Australia as well. He said that if the fans question the players’ place in the team, then the same should be true for the coaching staff. Speaking to Star Sports, he explained:
“What did your coaching staff do? Your bowling coach, batting coach… Look, the way we got a total out against New Zealand, 46 all out, the way we lost the rest of the matches, there was no strength in our batting , there was no power in our batting, so we should ask the question, what did you do?
“Show us, there were such good balls, our batsmen couldn’t face them. That’s fine, that reason is fine. If there are good balls, then there’s no problem. Every great batsman has a problem when he gets good balls. But when that doesn’t happen, then tell me, what have you done in this program, should we let them play in the future?” asked Sunil Gavaskar.
Ask the professional staff, what did you do? – Sunil Gavaskar in a staff led by Gautam Gambhir
Sunil Gavaskar questioned the future of the coaching staff saying that they have not corrected the technique and temperament of the players. He elaborated:
“We also have to ask ourselves, should we let the coaching staff play in the future? We have 2-3 months before going to England. I’m not talking about the Champions Trophy. I am talking about 5 test matches. I was a Test match player. I know about one day cricket but not that much. So I’m going to ask you, what did you do?
“How can you improve them? Tell me, how can you improve them? What did you do? Throwdown is not enough. You had to make their technique and temperament. You didn’t do it. So ask questions of the players who didn’t run, but also ask the coaching staff, what did you do?” asked Sunil Gavaskar.
