South African mine rescue: 78 bodies, 246 illegal miners pulled out

Police have called off a rescue operation launched in South Africa to save around 300 illegal miners known as ZamaZamas trapped more than two kilometers underground. In July, the police launched an operation to smoke out the miners by blocking the entry of food and medicine into the shaft. Authorities claimed the Zamzams refused to surface because they feared arrest, but six months later reports emerged that there was no viable way out for the miners and that they were indeed trapped. The High Court ordered an immediate rescue plan and videos emerged of dozens of dead bodies strewn among the starving miners who were trapped. This report by Tom Canetti and Graham Walsh.
