Shubman Gill trolled and failed by Adam Gilchrist, Michael Vaughan

Legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist has come down hard on India’s young talent Shubman Gill for his disappointing performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Gilchrist also savaged Gill for concentrating more on his hair than his performances on the field. Former England striker Michael Vaughan was also unhappy with Gill’s performance and questioned his consistency with the bat.

Shubman Gill did not look his best throughout the game series against Australia. His footwork was questionable and his technique was easily exposed by Australia’s world class bowling attack.

Adam Gilchrist on Shubman Gill’s performance

While speaking on ‘Club Prairie Fire’ YouTube channel, Adam Gilchrist was asked about Shubman Gill’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gilchrist gave Gill only 4 out of 10 points, while noting his hairstyle.

“I was going to give him (Shubman Gill) maybe three but I’d give him 4/10 because I think he knows that a world cricketer has better hair when he takes the helmet off. As soon as the helmet comes off … it’s perfect,” Gilchrist said.

Shubman Gill is seen as the future batting star of Indian cricket after that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He is also poised to be the future captain of India in the next few years and has also led the team in several T20Is.

“He frustrates me” – Michael Vaughan on Shubman Gill

On the same show, Michael Vaughan was also asked about Shubman Gill’s poor performance in the Test series against Australia. Vaughan claimed he was frustrated by Gill’s poor shots and felt he needed to justify his elegance and talent.

“4/10 (When asked about the number of points), he (Shubman Gill) frustrates me. He needs to get higher scores. He is so lovely, elegant as we call him,” Vaughan said.

Shubman Gill has one of the most elegant drives in the game among the current crop of cricketers. Although his footwork is minimal, he has excellent hand-eye coordination that allows him to comfortably play sharp shots.

Shubman Gill in BGT 2024-25

Shubman Gill played 32 Tests and scored 1993 runs at an average of 35.05 with 5 hundreds and 7 fifties. His alarming numbers made his selection in the team questionable.

In BGT 2024-25, Gill scored 93 runs in three Tests at an average of 18.60 while batting at the key position of No. 3. He missed the first Test due to an injury he sustained before the Test series. It remains to be seen whether the 25-year-old will play in India’s tour of England in June or not.

Gill scored a match-winning 91 in the Gabba Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 to help India win the historic match. But since 110 against Bangladesh in December 2022, he has not scored a fifty at home in 16 innings.
