Sarfaraz Khan was ruled out of cricket after injuring himself during BGT


In a significant blow, Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan is likely to miss the upcoming 2024-25 Ranji Trophy match due to an injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. According to reports, Sarfaraz Khan might miss all the group stage matches of the tournament and might return only for the knockout stage.

Mumbai are currently placed third in Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Group A with 22 points. In the first game of the tournament, the home giants won three games, lost one and drew. The return leg of the season will begin with a match against Jammu & Kashmir, starting on Thursday, January 23.

The right-handed batsman reportedly suffered a minor rib fracture while fielding shortly before the team left for Australia. After returning to India, the scan confirmed the injury and he was recommended to rest for three weeks. As a result, Sarfaraz is likely to miss the group stage of the tournament.

“He sustained the injury while on the field during a training session just days before the Indian team left Australia. After returning to India, scans showed that he had sustained a minor rib fracture and he was advised by the doctor to rest for three weeks. It is unlikely that he will play for Mumbai in their match against J&K, in fact, he might miss the entire league stage of the tournament and be ready only for the knockouts, a source was quoted as saying by TOI.

Sarfaraz Khan missed playing XI in BGT 2024-25

Sarfaraz Khan did not get a chance to play a single match during Team India’s 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign, where the team lost 3-1. The 27-year-old has played six Test matches for the national cricket team, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including one century and three 50s.

Mumbai will be boosted by the return of Shivam Dube, who was dropped from India’s T20I squad for the five-match series against England. Indian captain Rohit Sharma is expected to join the Ranji Trophy training camp in Mumbai on Tuesday. He still hasn’t confirmed his participation in the upcoming match.

Sarfaraz Khan made his first-class debut in December 2014. He played 54 matches, scoring 4593 runs at an impressive average of 65.61, including 16 centuries and 14 half-centuries.

One of his memorable performances came in October 2024 during the Irani Trophy, where he was named man of the match for his unbeaten 222 off 286 balls, which included 25 fours and four sixes.

The right-handed batsman helped Mumbai win the Irani Cup by taking the lead in the first innings. Sarfaraz’s consistent performance in domestic cricket has cemented his reputation as a prolific batsman.
