Ruben Amorim reveals why improved Man Utd made him ‘angrier’

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted he is “really, really angry” as his players have not been able to deliver the level of performance they showed at Liverpool.

The Red Devils played a confident and assured game at Anfield win a well-deserved point away from their bitter rivals – Bruno Fernandes leading by example with a good display in midfield.

United lined up with Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield and the pair produced arguably their best games of the season, complementing a display from Fernandes who showed more maturity on the ball and far better decision-making.

Harry Maguire could have won the game when United were dying but he tipped Joshua Zirkzee’s shot over Alisson’s crossbar.

Speaking with Sky Sports after the game, Amorim admitted that he was pleased with United’s display, but was more irritated by the fact that his side had put in a string of poor performances since taking over the club.

“I get even more angry about other games so some things are even harder to understand,” Amorim mused. “It’s not about the system, the technique, it’s about something else, and that’s hard for the coach to understand.

“That’s the point and I think we should be angry and disappointed more than what we did against Newcastle. We must be really disappointed and I have to calm down and say the right things. We are in a difficult moment. If we play Liverpool every day we will do it, but we have to do it against any opponent. We have to fight hard to get out of this situation.

“The way we were really competitive, that’s the key thing going forward. I’m happy with the performance, I’m not happy with the result, but I’m really, really angry about the other games.”

UnitedStrength of character has been questioned on numerous occasions – Amorim himself admitted before the match that his players were sometimes “scared” – and the Portuguese added BBC Match of the Day that his team has shown what it is capable of if it gets involved and plays at its best.

“It should be a big problem for our players that even one person thinks you have the ability but not the character, we have to fight that and change that,” he said. “I think it’s really clear. When we are concentrated, when we fight for every ball, when we suffer and when the game is tired, we are a good team.

“If we don’t do that all the time then we will lose games. That’s clear to everyone.”
