Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma set a record in terms of speculation about his retirement from Test cricket after missing the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Rohit Sharma on retirement talks
Rohit’s decision to miss the Sydney Test has been one of the most talked about topics in the cricketing world for the past few days. In an interview with Star Sports during the lunch break on the second day of the Test, the Indian star clarified that he is not retiring from the longest format. He cited his poor form as the only reason for his absence, denying any thoughts of an imminent retirement.
“This is not a retirement decision. I’m not moving away from this game. But I decided to retire from this game because I couldn’t score runs with the bat,” Rohit said.
Current form and future in Test cricket
Rohit has struggled with the bat in the current series against Australia, managing just 31 runs in five innings, signaling a significant dip in his performance. Despite this, he remains optimistic about his future in the format, showing his belief in his potential to bounce back while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of cricket.
“There is no guarantee that I will score points two or five months from now. I have seen a lot of cricket, every minute, every second and everyday life changes. I believe that things will change, but at the same time I have to be realistic.” Rohit added.

Rohit lashed out at the critics
The cricketing community, including fans and former players, have been rife with speculation about Rohit’s future, particularly after reports suggested talks with BCCI officials and voters on pension. However, those rumors were put to rest when the Nagpur-born cricketer lashed out at critics, saying that he had played the game for a very long time and knew what he was doing, and people who sit in the commentary box or analyze his game will not decides about his future.
“People sitting in the comment box, or writing with a laptop in their hands, will not decide how my life will unfold. I’ve played the game for so long that they won’t decide when I play, how I play, when I’m captain or when I step down. I am a reasonable person, a mature person, the father of 2 children, I have a little brain and I know what I want from my life.” the Indian captain added further.
