Pushing: Egg prices rose by almost 37 percent
Those who buy their daily breakfast items may notice an increase in the total amount on theirs grocery store income.
The consumer price index shows that egg prices have increased by 36.8% compared to this time last year.
The average price of a dozen large grade A eggs was $4.15 in December, up nearly $2 from $2.51 per dozen in December 2023, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
THIS IS WHY STORES ARE REALLY RAISING THE PRICES
One of the biggest reasons for the increase is recent bird flu outbreak.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was directly or indirectly responsible for killing more than 20 million laying hens in the last quarter of 2024, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
Farms must destroy all birds in an infected flock, destroying the egg industry.
EGG PRICES ARE HIGHER AND WILL CONTINUE IN 2025
Another factor could be new laws without cages which started affecting states like Michigan at the beginning of the year.
Although Michigan lawmakers amended the Animal Industry Act in 2019, it went into effect early in the new year — requiring shell eggs sold to be cage-free.
The law also prohibits business owners from selling eggs from laying hens that do not have usable floor space or those that are enclosed.
Some estimates show that the average price of a dozen large eggs could be nearly $5 by the end of 2025, which would be the highest average price of a dozen eggs ever recorded, Fox News Digital reported. The price of eggs in California it reached nearly $9 per dozen in some areas.
The highest price was recorded in January 2023, when average price of a dozen large eggs it was $4.82. Months later, the price dropped to just over two dollars.
