Arsenal let a two-goal lead slip as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
A deceptive first 30 minutes had Arsenal fans fearing that their side’s struggles in front of goal would reign again, but those concerns were allayed when Gabriel Martinelli struck from close range late in the first half. Emiliano Martinez struggled to save a shot on the goal line, but the buzzer on the referee’s clock confirmed the goal.
Havertz doubled Arsenal’s lead early in the second half with a smart finish from Leandro Trossard’s cross, but Youri Tielemans’ header halved the deficit almost immediately and Ollie Watkins’ controlled volley brought the sides level in the last 20 minutes.
Arsenal thought they had won late on when Mikel Merino’s shot found the back of the net, only for a VAR review to attribute Kai Havertz’s handball.
With Liverpool grabbing a late win over Brentford earlier in the day, the Gunners are now six points adrift of the league leaders after having played a game more.
