Player ratings as FA Cup holders win thriller on penalties
Altay Bayindir was the hero as Manchester United beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a thrilling FA Cup third round tie at the Emirates Stadium.
The enthralling game in north London ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of frenetic action, with United taking an early second-half lead through Bruno Fernandes before Gabriel Magalhaes equalised.
Diogo Dalot was sent off after picking up two yellow cards, putting United under unnecessary stress and pressure, and his departure was the catalyst for Bayindir to produce a wonderful display in the latter stages of the game.
Fernandes’ goal was a wonderful first-time effort that settled into the corner of David Raya’s goal – the Portuguese benefiting from good work from Alejandro Garnach.
Dalot was barely out of contention before Gabriel Magalhaes equalized with a low strike, before Martin Odegaard missed a penalty for Arsenal – Bayindir gets down to his left to prevent the Norwegian.
Chances were then spurned by Kai Havertz and Declan Rice ahead of extra-time, but despite the home side pushing for the winner, looking to extend their numerical advantage, they were unable to break a spirited, tenacious United.
Havertz was denied in the shootout and United converted all five of their shots to earn a famous victory and a place in the fourth round.
