Oscar nominations: ‘Emilia Pérez’ star Selena Gomez, Demi Moore lead the biggest transgressions and surprises

On Thursday, Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott announced the 2025 nominations in Los Angeles. “Emilia Perez” topped the list and became the most nominated non-English language film ever, according to the Associated Press. Followed by “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” with 10 nominations each, “A Complete Unknown” and “Conclave” with eight nominations each and “Anora” with six nominations.
While actors like Selena Gomez, Nicole KidmanAngelina Gomez and others were noticeably snubbed for their roles in individual films, others like Demi Moore and Sebastian Stan earned well-deserved nominations.

Selena Gomez, “Emilia Perez”

While French director Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” received a total of 13 nominations, Selena Gomez – who plays Jessi Del Monte, the cartel leader’s wife who undergoes gender-affirmation surgery – did not grab a single nomination.
Speaking more about her role in the film, Gomez said Life in Palm Springs in December, “There couldn’t be a more perfect time for this film. It’s such a true representation of what women are capable of — how powerful women can be. These women are mothers, they’re fighters for justice in compromising situations. It’s all so relevant.” now, I couldn’t be more proud to be a Latina woman and to be a part of this story with an incredible lead actress that I hope will go down in history.”
Denzel Washington, “Gladiator II”

Although the actor got 11 Golden Globe nomination for his work in “Gladiator II” earlier this month, setting a new record for the most nominations for a black actor in the history of the awards, Denzel Washington did not receive an Oscar nomination.
Nicole Kidman, “Girl”

It was opened by Nicole Kidman in December “raw and dangerous” role in the film and explained why it’s empowering to be seen as a “sexual being” at the age of 57.

“A lot of times women are dismissed at a certain point in their career as sexual beings. So it was really nice to be seen in this way,” said the Australian. The Hollywood Reporter her portrayal of powerful CEO and mom Romy, who in the film engages in a hot affair with her younger intern Samuel (Harris Dickinson). “From the moment I read it, I thought, ‘Yeah, this is a voice I haven’t seen, this is a place I haven’t been, I don’t think the audience has been.’ My character has reached a stage where she has all the power, but she’s not sure who she is, what she wants, even though she seems to have it all.
Angelina Jolie, “Maria”

Angelina Jolie, who portrays opera legend Maria Callas in the film, underwent months of Italian tuition and rigorous vocal training to perform some of Callas’ biggest hits, according to W magazine.
“I was very ‘into it’ when I was in it. I had seven months of singing lessons, Italian lessons and opera lessons,” Jolie said. “Then during the recording, Pablo and the crew treated me as a singer — which really meant a lot to me. I had pianos everywhere I went, my coaches, my exercises and every night I practiced for the next show. But I’m different because I’m a mom so I was able to step away from a busy day at work and think about something else.”
Pamela Anderson, “The Last Showgirl”

In the film, Pamela Anderson portrays a dancer from Las Vegas who is kicked out of the industry because of her age. Anderson recently said Variety’s Studio that landing such a big role this late in her career “came at the right time.”
“Everything just came at the right time. The stars really aligned. This is like a dream experience. Watching the movie, I felt like it was a dream. Making the movie, it felt like a dream. And now, I also feel very surreal, like I’m going to wake up and this isn’t really happening and then I’m going to be really angry,” she joked.

The biggest surprises
Demi Moore, “The Substance”

Demi Moore, who portrays Elisabeth, an actress unceremoniously fired from her fitness show at age 50, won her first Oscar nomination on Thursday.
“It was a very difficult film, very raw, very vulnerable to make, but at the same time liberating,” Moore said The Guardian.
“I had less pressure than Margaret [Qualley] because she had the added pressure to look amazing. I completely degraded [the movie]and I knew going in that I wasn’t going to be shot in the most glamorous or soft-edged way; in fact, the opposite. But there was something liberating about it.”
