New Zealand they will be eyeing a big series win when they take on Sri Lanka in the second ODI of the ongoing NZ vs SL series. is scheduled to be played on Wednesday (January 8, 2025) at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
The Blackcaps took the lead in the series after beating Sri Lanka by 9 wickets in the first ODI. Riding on Matt Henry’s brilliant 4-wicket haul, New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by just 178 runs.
In response, they chased down the total with the utmost ease. The home team crossed the finish line with 27 overs, losing only 1 wicket. Will Young led the charge with the bat for the Blackcaps, scoring an unbeaten 90 while also sharing over fifty per cent with Rachin Ravindra (45) and Mark Chapman (29*).

Openers: Will Young, Rachin Ravindra
Will Young and Rachin Ravindra look set to be the openers for New Zealand, playing 11 in the second game. Both the openers did well with the bat in the first ODI against Sri Lanka and will be eyeing a similar performance in the second match as well.
While the hosts were chasing a very modest total, a poor start with the bat could have made things difficult for them. However, Young and Ravindra did not allow Sri Lanka to make early strides in the game.
The duo shared 93 runs for the first wicket to all but end Sri Lanka’s slim chances of victory. Young also shared an unbeaten stand of 87 runs with Mark Chapman for the second wicket. Will Young he remained unbeaten on 90 while Ravindra departed after scoring 45.

Mark Chapman also played a handy knock in the first ODI. He was tasked with making sure the Blackcaps didn’t throw away a good start and he didn’t disappoint. Peddler scored an unbeaten 29 runs while sharing an unbeaten 87-run stand with Young for the second wicket.
Players like Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Michael Hay got a chance to bat or bowl in the first match. He looks set to retain his place in the Playing 11 for the upcoming game.
On a pitch that helped the pacers more, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner not only took a wicket but also bowled an economical spell. In 7 overs, the left-armer conceded just 27 runs as she dismissed a well-placed Janith Liyanage for 36.
Nathan Smith also impressed with the ball. The 26-year-old all-rounder claimed 2 wickets while conceding 43 runs in 8 overs. Smith also bowled a couple of maiden overs.
Bowlers: Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, William O’Rourke
The bowling line-up in the New Zealand Playing 11 is unlikely to see any changes after the bowlers’ impressive display in the first ODI. Matt Henry did a brilliant job leading the pace of the attack. The senior pacer claimed 4 wickets for just 19 runs in his 10 overs. Henry was also named man of the match for his efforts.
Jacob Duffy continued his good run, picking up 2 wickets for 39 runs. On the other hand, William O’Rourke remained wicketless for 50 runs but is expected to be in New Zealand’s 11 in the second game.
