New York police are hunting the ‘Haggler After Midnight’ robber in a bizarre crime spree


New York police are hunting a moped-wielding, knife-wielding robber who has been dubbed the “bargainer after midnight” because of his distinctiveness. predatory approachsaying that his pursuits are increasingly brazen and violent.

Since the beginning of November, the suspect has targeted 11 victims Brooklyn and Queenstypically Hispanic men between the ages of 20 and 40 on their way home from work in the early morning hours, police said.

Deputy Chief John Mastronardi in the Crimes Against Persons Division he told WNBC that the robber negotiates in both English and Spanish.

“He has a strange way of behaving – he likes to bargain with his victims, so we call him the ‘After Midnight Bargainer,'” he said. “Often if the victim produces assets to give up, they say ‘No, no, no, I don’t want that, I want that.’ So he can choose.”

Police said the robber appeared to be most interested in cash and electronics in each of the incidents, which began on Nov. 7. In each attack, he approached on a blue or dark-colored motor scooter, generally threatened the victims with a knife and relieved them of jewelry, phones, and other valuables.

At times, the robber asked his victims questions to gauge them, according to the NYPD. In one case he asked for directions; in another, he asked the victim if he was a construction worker.

The thief has struck nearly a dozen times since early November, police said. He usually approaches on a blue motorized scooter and threatens the victims with a knife. (NYPD)

His latest attack on Dec. 10 was his most daring yet, Mastronardi said.

“In the last one [incident]a man approached one of our victims and held a knife to her throat,” said the detective.

So far, none of the suspected victims have been injured.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for any information that leads to the man’s arrest.
