Montenegrin shooting in which gunman kills 12 people, including two children, before turning gun on himself

Podgorica, Montenegro — The gunman who opened fire in a restaurant in southern Montenegro killed a total of 12 people, including two children, the prosecutor said on Thursday.

“12 people were killed, two of whom were children,” prosecutor Andrijana Nastić told reporters in Cetinje, raising the earlier toll of at least 10 in Wednesday’s attack.

The attacker died after shooting himself in the head, police said early Thursday.

The killing spree began around 5:30 p.m. local time (1630 GMT) on Wednesday in the village of Bajice near the southern city of Cetinje, according to police.

The victims were killed in five different locations, the first four in the restaurant, the prosecutor said.

“Each place was inspected and evidence was taken. Prosecutorial and police actions are underway to establish the circumstances under which the event took place,” she said.

Four people were also seriously wounded and transported to the hospital in the capital Podgorica.

The lives of three of them are still in danger, Health Minister Vojislav Šimun said on Thursday.

The police ruled out “calculation of organized criminal groups”.

They said the firearms used were illegal.

The government declared a three-day national mourning from Thursday.

Mass shootings are rare in the small Balkan country.
