‘Mean Girls’ star seeks ‘justice’ for cousin’s brutal murder after uncovering harrowing family secret
Amanda Seyfried digs into his family roots.
The “Mean Girls” actress was stunned to discover that her third great-grandfather, John P. Ebert, was brutally murdered in 1905. A disturbing family secret was revealed in a PBS episode “Finding your roots.”
“Oh my god! What?!” Seyfried said as she read a newspaper article from the time, putting her hands to her forehead in disbelief.

“John P. Ebert, well-known retired baker, good citizen and harmless man, was shot three times by an unknown assailant on the back steps of his home at Washington and Lumber streets at 9:30 a.m. [p.m.]”, the article states.
Seyfried, 39, continued reading aloud: “He had just reached the back door … when a man stepped between the outbuilding and the sheltered gazebo and fired three shots at him at close range.”
“Oh my God, that’s so sad,” he said “Mamma Mia” said the actress.
Henry Louis Gates Jr., the host of the show, confirmed: “Your third great grandfather has been killed.”
He then asked the actress, “Have you ever heard this story before?”

“No, no. Definitely not,” Seyfried replied.
She then added that she felt terrible for her third great grandmother, also named Amanda, and their children.
“It’s weird — I don’t know him, but still, he’s family,” Seyfried said in the dramatic video clip. “I just say, ‘How dare they!’ .’Find justice’.”

He added that Mitchell has six children of his own.
“So we’re the Mitchells?” – the “Pretty Women” actress asked then.
“You’re Julia Mitchell,” Gates Jr. confirmed. “You’re not Roberts, biologically.”
“Wow… On the one hand… I was really… blown away,” Roberts emotionally responded to the scandalous revelations.
