Lebanon Fire Interruption Agreement extended as an initial deadline

The United States and Lebanon say that an agreement on the interruption of fire with Israel – which was supposed to expire on Sunday – extended by mid -February.

Israel held troops arranged in Lebanon after the initial deadline, accusing the Lebanese government of not fully implementing its part of the agreement, which required the removal of Hezbollah from the area.

On Sunday, the Lebanese Ministry of Health said that Israeli soldiers killed 22 people and wounded 124 others who were trying to return to their homes in the south of the country.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib says, after contact from the USA, the truce will remain in effect until February 18th.

The initial plan of interrupting fire, announced at the end of November, brought the end of 14 months of conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

Posted the US and France, the agreement gave Hezbollah for 60 days to end its armed presence in South Lebanon and demanded it from Israeli forces to withdraw in the same period.

An announcement of the plan, then US President Joe Biden said he was “designed as a permanent cessation of hostilities” between the two sides.

But on Friday, with two days before the deadline, Israel said that some soldiers would remain in the region because the Fire Interruption Agreement was still fully implemented by the Lebanese state.

A statement at the White House on Sunday is said to have been relocated to February 18, and that the negotiations will begin to return the Libanon prisoners trapped after October 7, 2023.

Thousands of Liban residents returned to cities and villages near the border because the agreement was agreed, despite warnings that the region is still insecure.

On Sunday, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that Israeli soldiers had killed 22 people in the area.

The Israeli army announced that he had fired “shooting shots in multiple areas,” not stating if people were affected, and arrested several people he claimed to represent a “immediate threat.”

A longtime conflict between Israel and Hezbollah – Iranian militant, political and social movement – escalated last September. This led to an intense Israeli air campaign throughout Lebanon, a ground invasion of the south of the country and the assassination of the older leaders of Hezbollah.

The offensive killed about 4,000 people in Lebanon – including many civilians – and led to a displaced by more than 1.2 million inhabitants.

The Israeli goal was to allow the return of about 60,000 inhabitants who escaped from the communities in the north due to the attack of Hezbollah and remove the group from the area along the border.

Hezbollah launched his campaign the day after the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, saying that it acts solidarously with the Palestinians in Gaza.
