Jasprit Bumrah officially ruled out, Rohit-Gambhir deeply dismayed

India’s national cricket team has suffered a major blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. According to reports in the Indian Express, it is learned that No. 1 fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the league stage of the tournament due to back swelling.

Jasprit Bumrah will now go to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he will be monitored and his recovery will begin. It is learned that the national selectors have got a clear picture of the fast bowler and discussions are now underway regarding his place in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

It is learned that the selectors are discussing whether to name Jasprit in the 15-man squad or put him on the reserve list for the tournament. The BCCI will soon name the provisional squad and will have until February 12. This will enable them to closely monitor Bumrah’s fitness.

The NCA will monitor his recovery and he will be there for three weeks – Source on Jasprit Bumrah

A source close to the development said that Jasprit Bumrah will be ready by early March. While confirming that the fast bowler has swelling on his back, he said the pacer will also play practice matches before returning. Speaking to the Indian Express, he said:

“He (Bumrah) will go to the NCA for rehabilitation. The initial report says he doesn’t have a fracture, but he has swelling on his back. So the NCA will monitor his recovery, and he will be there for three weeks. But even after that, he will have to play a match or two, even if they are practice matches organized to check his fitness for the match,” the source said.

This means that Bumrah will miss the Indian national cricket team’s opening matches in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Rohit Sharma-led side will play their last match against New Zealand on March 2, and it is not clear whether he will be a part of it or not.

Bumrah suffered a back injury during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He had a back problem during the last Test, where he bowled just 10 overs in the first innings and was then dropped from the field. He did not return to bowl in the second innings.

Jasprit Bumrah scored over 150 overs in five matches in Australia

The reason he got injured was potentially his workload. Premier India alone carried the team’s bowling line-up and scored more than 150 hits in five matches. He was also the leading wicket-taker in the series with 32 wickets.

The Indian team management hopes that Jasprit Bumrah will regain his full fitness and play some role in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Even if he is available for the knockouts, it will be a big boost for the Indian national cricket team.
