With the January transfer window open and a chance for Paul Mitchell to make amends for the Magpies’ ongoing summer disappointment, Newcastle United they have already allegedly made the first move.

Those at St James’ Park endured a frustrating summer transfer window in Mitchell’s first months in charge, with the sporting director unable to get deals over the line for Marco Guehi and Anthony Elanga. A slow start to the season followed Eddie Howeteam, before returning players gave the former Bournemouth boss a much-needed boost that culminated in a run of five consecutive victories in all competitions.
That collective run combined with the recent form of Alexander Isak has not stood in the way of transfer rumours, especially around the Swede and potential transfer to Arsenal this year which would be a big blow.
However, he is not the only one who could be heading for the door, as Callum Wilson has yet to sign a new contract and is currently on track to become a free agent at the end of the season. Alas, if the experienced striker does leave, then it looks like the Magpies already have a plan.
According to The Scottish Sun, Newcastle have officially completed the signing of Evan Mooney from St. Mirren, but have yet to submit their first offer in the race for his signature with Arsenal.

At just 17, Mooney is undoubtedly one for the future and a striker who would immediately learn from the likes of Isak if asked to take over as Wilson’s understudy in that department.

Swapping the old for the new by potentially welcoming Mooney in preparation for Wilson’s departure, Newcastle would be planning an intelligent move in advance. The teenager impressed many in Scotland and earned four appearances for the St. John’s senior team. Mirren in the Scottish Premiership, scoring once and assisting once in an excellent spell.
A player who can play on the right as well as in a leading role, Mooney’s arrival would kill two birds with one stone at St James’ Park for years to come, replacing Isak and replacing Miguel Almiron.
However, it will not be a simple race for the youngster’s signature with Arsenal interested. The Magpies need to put together a strong performance to lure Mooney away from the Gunners and towards Newcastle.
With Wilson on his way out, they can at least offer an immediate path to the first team to get key minutes from the attack. Arsenal, meanwhile, may not be able to offer such a role in their side.
