Pakistan cricket has recently been marred by a series of disheartening events, the latest setback being significant. Pakistan entered the Test series against South Africa in good spirits after winning the ODI series. However, their confidence quickly evaporated as they faced a narrow defeat in the first Test, followed by a humiliating 10-wicket loss in the second Test. This defeat was particularly painful as it marked their second straight defeat in the series, keeping South Africa clean.
In the second Test, Pakistan bowlers bowled five overs, leading to a fine of 25% of their match fees and the deduction of five WTC points. They pronounced the punishments Richie Richardson by the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees after evaluation by the on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menontogether with the third judge Alex Wharf and the fourth judge Stephen Harris. Sample overpricing problem
This is not the first time that Pakistan has faced penalties for slow rate hikes. Earlier in 2023, points were merged during the test against Australia and again in August 2024 during a home series against Bangladesh. These recurring problems highlight a worrying trend that needs to be addressed if Pakistan hopes to improve its standing in international cricket.
ICC regulations dictate that teams are fined 5% of their match fees for each number of cones less than required. Additionally, for each over short, one WTC point is deducted from the team total. With these penalties now piling up against them, Pakistan’s position in the WTC pecking order has become uncertain.
A dismal performance by Pakistan in the second Test
The second Test against South Africa was disastrous for Pakistan. After being brought in after South Africa’s massive first innings score of 615 runs, Pakistan struggled to make an impact with their batting line-up. Despite Masood’s commendable effort with a score of 145 runs in the second innings, he lacked the support of his teammates, leading to another disappointing outcome.
The match ended with South Africa managing just 58 runs without losing a wicket to seal their victory and confirm their place in the WTC final against Australia. This devastating defeat not only reflects badly on Pakistan’s performance but also raises questions about their readiness and strategy moving forward.
