The FBI on Sunday released new details about the travels of 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the man authorities say carried out the deadly attack New Year’s terrorist attack in New Orleans.
Jabbar, who authorities said acted alone in the Bourbon Street attack that killed 14 people, traveled to Cairo, Egypt from June 22 to July 3, 2023 before flying to Ontario, Canada and returning was in the US a few days later, the FBI said at a press conference. Jabbar also made at least two trips to New Orleans in October and November before the deadly attack and recorded video of the site with Meta smart glasses.
“Our agents are getting answers to where he went, who he went with and how those trips may or may not be connected to his actions here,” said Lyonel Myrthil, the FBI’s special agent in charge of the New Orleans field office.
Although it remains unclear whether these trips are connected to the attack, Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI Christopher Raia said the agency is investigating whether Jabbar had associates in the U.S. or abroad.

“All the details of the investigation and the evidence we have now still confirm that Jabbar was acting alone here in New Orleans,” Raia said. “We have seen no indication of accomplices in the United States, but we are still investigating potential associates in the US and beyond our borders.”

Jabbar, an Army veteran from Houston, made his way through the crowd in a rented Ford pickup Bourbon Street entertainers in an attack that officials say was inspired by the Islamic State. Dozens of others were injured in the truck attack, and Jabbar was killed in a shootout with police.
The FBI recovered a black ISIS flag from the rental truck and discovered that Jabbar had pledged allegiance to ISIS in videos released hours before the attack.

The coroner’s office in New Orleans identified all 14 victims, the youngest being 18 and the oldest 63. Most of the victims were in their 20s.

President Biden planned to travel to New Orleans with First Lady Jill Biden on Monday to “grieve with the families and community members affected by the tragic attack.”
