FBI Releases Video Showing Suspected January 2021 Pipe Bomb Device Outside DNC, RNC DC Offices
The FBI released a new video on Thursday that allegedly shows a suspect on January 5, 2021, who planted the pipe bombs outside the offices of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee in Washington, DC
With video, FBI also revealed the suspect is believed to be around 5ft 7in tall in an effort to elicit new information from the public ahead of the crime’s fourth anniversary.
The FBI noted that a $500,000 reward is still available for information leading to an arrest.
The attempted attack took place on the eve of January 6, 2021. attack on the US Capitolbut there is no clear connection between the two events.
“Without being able to confirm the identity of the suspect, it’s very difficult to definitively determine a motive,” David Sundberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington field office, told The Associated Press. “So it would be hard for us to say there is a link, although we can’t say there isn’t.”
Investigators are not even sure if the suspect is a man or a woman.
The suspect was wearing a gray hoodie, a face mask, black gloves and Nike Air Max Speed Turf trainers, the FBI said, adding that fewer than 25,000 pairs of the footwear were sold between August 2018 and the time of the attack.
“Based on the clothing, that’s probably the most prominent or recognizable feature when it comes to the clothing that the suspect was wearing,” Sundberg said. “Hopefully someone might recognize it.”
The FBI has evaluated more than 600 tips, reviewed about 39,000 video files and conducted more than 1,000 interviews over the past four years.
New video shows the suspect planting the first bomb near a bench outside the Democratic National Committee building shortly before 8 p.m
The suspect then planted a second bomb in an alley behind the Republican National Committee building around 8:16 p.m., and was last seen on surveillance video two minutes later walking past a row of D.C. homes carrying a backpack that investigators believe was used for transportation pipe bombs.
“We still believe there is someone out there who has information that they may not have known was significant,” the FBI video’s narrator said. “We ask that you come forward and share that information with the FBI.”
No one was injured in the attempted attack and the bombs were removed, but the FBI said it could have been deadly.
