(Reuters) – Donald Trump’s sentencing in his criminal trial in New York on Friday ended a string of prosecutions that he largely won to reclaim the U.S. presidency, even as he is still fighting to avoid paying hundreds of millions of dollars in civil litigation losses .
Here’s a look at the cases against the president-elect and their status ahead of his January 20 inauguration.
NEW YORK HUSH MONEY CASE
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump in March 2023 with illegally falsifying business records to cover up an alleged affair with a porn star. A jury convicted him of 34 felonies in May 2024. The judge overseeing the case has indicated he has no plans to send Trump to prison. But by granting an unconditional discharge, it would put the guilty verdict on Trump’s permanent record.
Trump has denied wrongdoing and has promised an appeal. An appeals court could overturn a conviction even after sentencing.
THE CASE OF ELECTION SUBVERSION IN GEORGIA
Trump and 18 of his allies were indicted in 2023 for what prosecutors said was a wide-ranging conspiracy to reverse Trump’s 2020 election defeat in the battleground state of Georgia.
The prosecution stalled after an appeals court disqualified the district attorney in the case because of her undisclosed affair with the lead prosecutor in the case, but could potentially move forward under a new prosecutor.
FLORIDA CASE OF CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENTS
Federal prosecutors overseen by US special counsel Jack Smith charged Trump and two of his associates in June 2023 with allegedly mishandling classified documents after Trump left office.
A judge dismissed the case in 2024, and the US Justice Department dropped its appeal of the ruling, which applied to Trump after he won the 2024 election, because the department’s policy prohibits federal prosecutors from prosecuting sitting presidents.
WASHINGTON, DC, A CASE OF ELECTION SUBVERSION
Smith separately indicted Trump in Washington, DC, in August 2023 over his efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election. A judge dismissed the case in November after Smith said it could not proceed while Trump is president.
NEW YORK CIVIL FRAUD CASE
In September 2023, a New York judge found Trump liable for fraud for inflating his net worth to defraud lenders and later ordered him to pay $454 million in fines, an amount that has since grown with interest.
Trump has denied wrongdoing and appealed.
E. JEAN CARROLL SEXUAL ABUSE, DEFAMATION CIVIL CASES
Trump has been found liable for defamation and sexual assault of writer E. Jean Carroll in two separate lawsuits over an alleged incident in the 1990s when Carroll said Trump assaulted her in a Manhattan department store. The jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll a total of more than $88 million in damages.
Trump has denied attacking or defaming Carroll and has appealed.
