“Embrace with Death” – WV Raman recalls a near-death experience after a severe allergic reaction
Former Indian women’s cricket head coach WV Raman recently recalled an experience when a mild allergy escalated into a life-threatening anaphylactic shock. WV Raman said his doctor recommended immediate hospital care due to a possible allergic reaction, narrowly avoiding a terrifying death experience.
The former batsman played 11 Tests and 27 ODIs for India between 1988 and 1997, amassing more than 1,000 runs in 38 matches. Apart from his playing career, Raman has extensive coaching experience at the domestic, international and IPL levels. He also played for Tamil Nadu in 132 first-class matches and 87 List A matches.

WV Raman said his routine visit turned into a life-threatening situation when he suffered a severe allergic reaction. Raman stated that he noticed a rash spreading over his body after taking the prescribed medication. He began to feel congestion in his chest and a strange rush of blood to his face while driving.
“Last Tuesday started with a consultation with a general practitioner due to a viral infection I had. He prescribed me several medicines and an hour later, I drank them after eating. Two hours later, I noticed several hives on my body that started to spread,” Raman wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I called my doctor and he suggested I go to the hospital and get a shot for a typical drug/food allergy. Maybe I ignored it or put it off, but I felt a little blood in my face. That was weird, I thought, and drove away. to the hospital,” he added.

Raman expressed his gratitude to the doctors for ensuring his recovery and safety. The doctor gave an injection, but Raman’s condition worsened. He experienced a terrifying moment when his health suddenly deteriorated, and he lost consciousness for 45-60 seconds before regaining consciousness.
“The 3 km drive was very unpleasant. On the way, I felt a little congestion in my chest, reached the hospital, the doctor gave an injection. While the procedures were being performed, I felt terrible,” he wrote.
“I told the doctor that despite the treatment, I am getting worse. Things went downhill very quickly, and there I was in the embrace of death for about 45-60 seconds. I fainted and after a few minutes came to my senses! A seemingly mild allergy culminated in anaphylactic shock,” he added.

WV Raman urged everyone to pay attention to the signs their body is giving them and to discuss these symptoms with family and friends. Raman confirmed that he has now fully recovered and was able to travel for commentary duties during the women’s ODI series between India and Ireland.
