“Just here as tourists,” Trump Jr. said. to journalists as he entered the airport in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, on Tuesday. “We’ve been talking about going for a while now. I was actually supposed to be here last spring because of some things I do in my spare time, but I’m really excited to be here. Awesome country.”
He was quickly asked about his father, who had expressed his desire for Greenland to become part of the US, but he responded only to say that soon another president, “regards”.
“We talked to him yesterday, so he said hi to everybody in Greenland,” Trump Jr. said.
“Donald Trump Jr.’s visit is a private visit and that is respected by Naalakkersuisut — the Government of Greenland. So there will also be no reaction to the visit,” Minnnguaq Kleist, Greenland’s permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told CBS News before his arrival on Tuesday. “Our country is open for visitors, and visitors are welcome to our beautiful country.”

On Monday, President-elect Trump he said in a post on social media that, “hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA’. My son, Don Jr, and various representatives, will be traveling there to visit some of the most magnificent areas and sights, and the people will benefit enormously if, and when, it becomes part of our nations will protect and nurture it from the very wicked outside world, MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
Greenland has about 57,000 inhabitants and is a fully autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has oil, natural gas and mineral resources, but its economy relies on subsidies from Denmark and fishing.
President-elect Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland during his first term, though the idea was fleeting refused by the Danish authorities.
Two weeks ago, Trump said on social media that, “for the purposes of national security and freedom around the world, the United States of America considers ownership and control of Greenland an absolute necessity.”
Greenland’s government has twice rejected Mr Trump’s claims of interest in the territory, with Prime Minister Mute Egede speaking just before Christmas that “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale.”
Last week, Egede gave a New Year’s speech calling for Greenland to remove the “shackles of colonialism” and gain full independence from Denmark.
“It is high time that we ourselves take a step and shape our future, also considering who we will work closely with and who will be our trading partners,” Egede said.
One Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament, Aaja Chemnitz, said Trump’s interest should be rejected, Reuters reported.
“I don’t want to be a pawn in Trump’s feverish dreams of expanding his empire into our country,” Chemnitz said.
