Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis doubled down on his past criticism of California, praising the Sunshine State’s “future mindset” “Hannity” Thursday.
“See what happened in California it shows that the failures that we talked about that night unfortunately made a really terrible situation worse,” DeSantis said, referring to his debate with Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2023. “They didn’t do it well. Water resources or forest management. And it is the ideology that accompanied it.”
“It’s a mindset of the past. Florida is a mindset of the future.”
California leaders have faced intense scrutiny since wildfires broke out in the Golden State last week. However, criticism of the state’s “leftist ideology” is not new.
“You almost have to try to screw up California. That’s what Gavin Newsom has been doing since he’s been governor,” DeSantis said during “Hannity” special November 30, 2023 “The reality is that they failed because of his leftist ideology.”
After the wildfires in Los Angeles, many expressed concern about the policies of California’s Democratic leaders, including funding for first responders, particularly the incoming Trump administration preparation for assuming office.
DeSantis told Fox News host Sean Hannity that Americans will see “a stark contrast between a state like Florida, which takes seriously its responsibility to uphold the law and wants to work constructively with the new administration, and a state like California, which is a double-edged failure.”

The executive branch singled out immigration and border security as the biggest area of contrast.
“When Donald Trump takes office, he will get serious about the border and illegal immigration. California is a haven. LA is a city of refuge. They will fight him every step of the way. They won’t cooperate. In Florida…we are not a sanctuary. We banned sanctuary cities in my first year as governor.”
DeSantis vowed that his state would “do its duty” to support Trump’s agenda, urging other states to “step up” with it.
“We’re going to invest resources. There’s going to be a lot of things that we’re going to be able to do to really make an impact. And I think you’re going to see some really serious, positive changes very, very quickly,” he said.
“We talked as Republicans about it illegal immigration on the border for decades. Now is the time to put up or shut up. President Trump can’t do it alone. It needs the support of Congress, and the states need to step up and supplement their efforts.”
