DeSantis ‘didn’t see’ the media holding California leaders accountable for the wildfires
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called out a reporter Thursday for the lack of blame attributed to California leaders for the devastating wildfires, pointing out that it stands in stark contrast to how Republican leaders are often treated in the wake of disasters.
DeSantis and all the other Republican governors just finished dinner with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday night when a heated argument ensued with a reporter.
The reporter appeared to ask the other governor whether it was appropriate for Trump to criticize California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, as deadly wildfires rage across the state.
The question prompted DeSantis to step forward and ask, “Is it appropriate for people in your industry to try to create divisions and try to create narratives whenever these things happen?”
“Now, you’re not so interested in that because Newsom is D. If Newsom was a Republican, you’d go try to… have him nailed to the wall because of what they’re doing over there,” he continued.

The Florida governor, who has managed multiple disasters during his tenure, said he was often criticized for things beyond his control and was blamed for incidents before the facts came out, citing 2021. Demolition of Surfside condominiums.
“I think your track record in politicizing these things is very, very poor,” DeSantis said.
He said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass would be treated much differently for her trip to Ghana, while the fires would be high-risk if she were a Republican.
“You should have been there and prepared and done it, and yet I don’t see a lot of enthusiasm being directed [toward her]” DeSantis said. “I’d like to see some balance in how it’s done. You can criticize the president-elect, but you have to hold these other people accountable, and I haven’t seen that.”
Bass returned to Los Angeles on Wednesday and didn’t have much to say to residents of her hometown outside of press conferences. While waiting to disembark, she offered a cold shoulder to Sky News reporter David Blevins who asked her if she had anything to say about the devastating fires.
“No excuse for them? Do you think you should have visited Ghana while this was going on at home?” Blevins asked as Bass continued to look at the ground.
“Mrs. Mayoress, just to ask you one more time, do you have anything to say to the citizens upon your return today? he said.
As multiple wildfires rage in Los Angeles County, Californians are criticizing both Newsom and Bass for past decisions related to fire prevention efforts, including Bass’ decision to end LAFD budget for $17 million.
