Denise Austin knows why New Year’s resolutions fail, shares a simple tip for success
Denise Austin has been a pioneer in the fitness industry for 40 years, so she knows a thing or two about making New Year’s resolutions that stick.
Austin told Fox News Digital that people often take on too much or make their decisions too difficult, and the key is to start small.
“Make it easy on yourself. It’s so hard on you, if you’re joining a gym, you know, you might need a ride to get there. Those are obstacles in your way, so make it easy on yourself. And that’s why I like to walk. I like to work out at home.
“Or you won’t do it,” Austin said.

67-year-old she advised people to create “small habits” that they know they will be able to commit to and emphasized the importance of starting each day on the right foot.
“Make it convenient.”
“Let it stick because it always starts with that morning routine. And I’m a big believer in a great morning routine. It sort of sets your day. You feel better. So think about how easily you can make your day better by starting with just 20 minutes of walking.

Denise has mastered her own morning routine, which includes “old school” traditions.
“I wake up and drink coffee. I still read the paper. I’m old school. And then I start my 30-minute routine,” she said.
Austin noted that she only works out for 30 minutes a day to make sure she succeeds.
“That way I have some mental mindset for the day to eat healthier because I’ve done my best for 30 minutes,” she said.

Austin explained that the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is incorporating small steps throughout the day that will set you up for success.
“The key thing for me, I always tell people, is start small. Just 10 or 20 minutes. Drink lots of water. Try to eat whole foods from now on. If you can start your New Year’s resolutions, eat really healthy. Get rid of some of that processed food as much as whatever you can and make food for yourself,” she said.
Austin suggested cutting out “bad” seed oils, such as canola oil, and suggested replacing them with olive oil or avocado oil.
“Doing these little things goes a long way. Also, I’m a true believer in getting out in the morning sun. It really helps. Even if it’s 10 minutes, it really makes you feel better and lifts your mood, and it really fights depression,” Austin said.

“I want to start meditating,” she began. “My oldest daughter, Kelly Austin, has been teaching me how to meditate more and I have to make it a daily habit. So I’ve been trying, you know, trying to relax. I enjoy yoga. So for me, yoga is like a meditation feeling because I’m kind of calm with it and stretch, and I also like walking meditation.”
