Democratic strategist James Carville explains why he thinks Democrats lost in 2024 and his plans for the future of the party
Democratic strategist James Carville explained why he thinks Vice President Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election with CNN host Michael Smerconish on Saturday.
Smerconish addressed a reader’s comment in response to Carville’s New York Times op-ed of Thursday, “This is from The New York Times: ‘Character, honesty, decency, intelligence, democracy. None of these things seem to matter in our country when electing a president.’ I think that pretty much says everything you would say to that person?”
Carville replied, “Well, first of all, I completely agree with that person,” adding, “Michael, there’s a simple, basic rule of politics that voters want an election about them. They don’t want an election about you or your opponent. And we’re too we lost because of Trump, not because of the voters.”
Carville predicted a Harris victory before the election, even writing separately author for the Times titled “Three Reasons I’m Sure Kamala Harris Will Win”.

While we’re talking about Democrats prioritizing attacks President-elect Donald Trump to voters’ concerns, Carville wondered: “How could I, at 80 years old, doing this for 50 years, fall to that level of stupidity?”
The longtime Democratic strategist was also critical of his party’s understanding of how people receive information, saying, “Now I’m going to educate myself on how people receive information. I don’t think Democrats fully appreciate that.”
Carville noted the Republican Party’s use of alternative media, saying “I think they’re a lot better at what we would call alternative media, but I’m not sure that alternative media is not the main place people get information now,” adding, “I want to know where you people get this stupid information, and there’s so much misinformation, and you just can’t get it all right.”
He also blamed voter anxiety over how the Biden administration is handling inflation and southern border on misinformation, claiming, “People thought we had a border mess. People thought it was a price and inflation mess. People thought wrong. I would say it was a crime.”

He also argued that Republicans have taken the crisis at the southern border and “framed it as an economic issue. These people are coming to take your jobs. They’re not really doing anything like that.”

As for the future, Carville presented three issues the Democratic Party should focus on for the next election, “Let’s try to codify Roe v. Wade, which has two-thirds support. That’s all in the Democratic Party. They can’t do it. Let’s talk about raising the minimum wages to $15. That unites more than two-thirds of the taxes over 400,000. Don’t let those taxes expire and put them in a fund to help first-time buyers. they’re buying apartments. They can’t do that.”
