This is the deadliest air tragedy in the United States of November 12, 2001, when the American Airlines plane crashed into a living space of the port of Belle, New York, shortly after taking off from John F Kennedy International Airport in New York, killing 260 passengers on board and Five people on the field.
Here’s what we know about victims Wednesday collisions, what happened and what initial investigations suggest to contribute to the accident.
How did the plane crash break up?
Flight 5342, managed by American Eagle, a regional American Airlines branch, flew from Wichita in Kansas to the airport just outside Washington, DC. As Ronald Reagan Airport approached, around 9 pm, on Wednesday (02:00 GMT on Thursday), the aircraft collided with the Sikorsky Black Hawk army helicopter.
Immediately before landing, the pilots of the plane were asked to change the runways. While the plane was supposed to land on the main runway 1, the plane was asked to turn to the runway 33, which is much shorter. Flight monitoring cards showed that the pilots accepted this request and adjusted the plane.
Less than 30 seconds before the collision, the air traffic controller asked the military helicopter if he could see the plane.
“Pat25 [army helicopter]Do you have a crj [American Airlines plane] In sight? Pat25, go behind CRJ, “the air traffic controller said at 20:47.
Shortly later, air traffic controllers could be heard in which it is said, “Like, collide, collision, this is a warning three.”
Two aircraft demolished to the Potomac River. The cause of the collision is not yet known.
Was there survivors?
The Airlines Amerlines flight carried 60 passengers and four crew members, while Black Hawk had three US army soldiers on board.
“We are now at the place where we are moving from rescue operations to recovery surgery. At the moment, we do not believe that there are survivors of this accident,” Washington, DC, Don Chief John Donnelly said on Thursday.
How many bodies are recovered?
Donnelly added that the bodies of 27 people were recovered from the plane, while one body was recovered from a helicopter. Separately, the source for the implementation of the law told CBS News that at least 40 bodies were recovered.
What do we know about the investigation so far?
The National Transport Safety Committee (NTSB) conducts an investigation “All hands on the deck” of the collision, said President Jennifer Homendy during a press conference on Thursday.
NTSB is an independent federal agency that explores civil aviation accidents in the US, as well as serious incidents relating to other transportation methods.
NTSB announced on Friday that Found black boxes from the plane. Black frames record flight information, pilot conversations and radio communications during flights. These recorders provide significant information in an aircraft incident research as they can detect pilot actions or external factors that could contribute to accidents.
“Recorders are in the NTSB laboratories for assessment,” the post in the post on X.
Although an early stage investigation, more American media, including New York Times and NBC News, quoted unnamed sources, saying that there is a lack of air traffic controllers at the Reagan Airport on Wednesday night.
Although there is usually one air traffic controller for aircraft and the other for helicopters, the same person treated planes and helicopters on Wednesday night.
For the investigation, NTSB will form working groups to consider different areas related to the accident, according to a member of the NTSB Committee Todd Inman.
[BELOW: I think this graf would work better as bulleted items – easier to read and grasp]
Inman explained that these groups would include: operations, duties of members of the investigative crew and flight history; Power Systems, watching aircraft engines; Structures, documenting the scene of the accident and the air frame wreck; Survival factors, studying injuries sustained; systems, looking into electric, hydraulic and pneumatic plane and helicopter components; and air traffic control group.
The NTSB did not say how long the investigation would last, but aircraft investigations can last one to two years. The Agency usually publishes a preliminary report several weeks after the accident containing information collected at the scene.
