Jacob Fearnley provided an impressive Davis Cup debut while he leveled the UK with Japan after opening.
Because Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie were not involved in the first round of qualifying for the finals, Fearnley was handed to his debut as the highest ranked British player.
Fresh from the recent run to the third round of the Australian Open, the 23-year-old delivered again on the big stage, beating former finalist Grand Slam Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-3.
