One thing Washington politicians and Hollywood celebrities have in common is a penchant for giving themselves meaningless and undeserved awards, and this week President Joe Biden took that practice to a whole new level of absurdity.
On Thursday, former Wyoming House representative and Trump hater Liz Cheney received the Presidential Citizens Medal for her work as co-chair of the House Select Committee on the Jan. 6 attack along with the other co-chair, Rep. Benny Thompson.
So here’s the thing: no matter how one feels about the events of J6, Committee for January 6with its flashy prime-time hearings, it was by all reasonable measures a miserable and complete failure.
The American people have been promised a smoking gun that will end Donald Trump’s political career forever. Instead, Cheney and Thompson delivered a bone-dry super soaker. Oh, and by the way, Trump will be back in office in two weeks.

Well done, guys! Here’s your medal.
Just how much of a failure was Cheney’s inaugural Soviet-style trial? Well, according to Monmouth University, before the 2022 hearing, 42 percent of Americans held Trump directly responsible for the Jan. 6 riots, and after the ridiculous spectacle, that number dropped to 38 percent.
Millions of dollars were spent, thousands of man hours were spent, a former ABC News producer was brought in to spice things up and all for nothing, because Americans recognize a sham trial when they see one.
After all, this is the same Liz Cheney who, before succumbing to Trump Derangement Syndrome, said in 2020 that the FBI’s actions against Trump during Russiagate sounded “like a coup” and might even be “treason “.
But by the summer of 2022, Cheney saw an opportunity to get rid of Donald Trump once and for all and return the Republican Party to good old-fashioned establishment types like herself.

Trump, Cheney claimed, was an insurgent who illegally opposed the certification of ballots in free and fair elections! Never mind, of course, that Co-Chairman Thompson himself refused to vote to certify the 2004 election. That was obviously somehow different.
In those hearings, a parade of disgruntled former White House officials and a handful of Capitol police officers, among others, were lavishly praised from a podium full of seething Democrats who despise Trump and two Republicans, Cheney and Representative Adam Kinzingerwho might hate Trump even more.
What really did it in Cheney was how unyieldingly insufferable she became once the obsession with Trump took hold.
The whole ridiculous enterprise had all the fidelity of flipping a coin and shouting, “I get heads, you lose tails.”
And speaking of losing, in the midst of ten televised board hearings in the summer of 2022. Liz Cheney lost the primary to Harriet Hageman by almost 40 points. The fire of her hatred for Donald Trump has finally consumed Liz Cheney’s political career.
What really did it in Cheney was how unyieldingly insufferable she became after the obsession with Trump took hold.

Nothing else mattered. Not the border, not the economy, not the corruption or the incompetence of Joe Biden. The only thing that existed in the universe was the singular and evil supposed threat of Trump.
Even Kamala Harris’ hard-nosed campaign trotted out ol’ Angry Liz to stoke fear among the non-existent “Republicans for Harris.” Trump’s most fanatical detractors can’t understand why everyone doesn’t wake up in a cold sweat over Trump like they do.
Liz Cheney could have stood by her party and her caucus in 2022. She could have refused to participate in the unfair trial of Trump, even while being critical of him. If she did, she would probably still be in Congress. But instead, the insufferable scion of the Cheney political dynasty dismissed it all because she thought she knew better than the people she served.
Now, instead of a seat in the halls of power, Cheney has a useless bawlade gifted to her by a defeated, lame-duck president.

Who can say what’s next for Liz? Maybe her own Netflix special, after all, if someone as brutally unpopular as Meghan Markle can get a series, maybe someone as insufferable as Cheney can too.
Maybe one day Cheney will add an Emmy to her Presidential Citizens Medal, but one thing is for sure: Liz Cheney will never again be close to power in the Republican Party, and that’s really good news.
