David Lynch, director of “Twin Peaks” and “Blue Velvet”, died at 78
Director and writer David Lynch, best known for his dark and surrealist vision in films like “Blue Velvet” and the TV series “Twin Peaks”, died at 78.
His family confirmed his death in a Facebook post, writing, “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time.”
“There is a big hole in the world now that he is no longer with us,” the post continued. “But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut, not the hole.'”

In 2024, Lynch said he was diagnosed with emphysema after a lifetime of smoking and was unable to leave his home.
In an interview with sight and sound, the director said: “I’ve got emphysema from long smoking and so I’m housebound whether I like it or not.”

– I can’t get out – he continued. “And I can only walk a little before I run out of oxygen.”

“Smoking was something I absolutely loved, but eventually it bit me,” he admitted, expressing his love for smoking. “…nothing in this world is so beautiful. Meanwhile, it’s killing me. So I had to quit.”

During his career, the director, writer and occasional actor earned four Oscar nominations and five Emmy nominations, among dozens of other awards.
