Dave Chappelle’s comic hits new Netflix trans joke special: ‘It’s not funny, it’s dangerous’
Comedian Michelle Buteau gushed Dave Chappelle for cashing in on the “unfunny” and “dangerous” jokes about the transgender community in his hit Netflix specials.
Buteau hosted her own comedy show, “Michelle Buteau: The Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall,” which premiered on Netflix on Tuesday. During her performance, she made an explicit joke about her “beautiful, black lesbian friend”, who she claimed exemplified how to respect the LGBTQ community.
“What I’m saying is it can be done. It can be done. We can tell jokes and stories and not belittle the whole community,” Buteau said. “We can do it, we can make it funny. You just have to work at it, right?
“So if you ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know that s—? I don’t think he s— knows.”
“I don’t think we’re going to run into Dave because he’s the GOAT. And he’s the GOAT, if that means ‘talking about trans people.’
“Dave, it’s not funny. It’s dangerous,” she continued. “I can’t believe that someone would make millions and millions of dollars to make people feel unsafe. It’s so wild to me, it really is.”
DAVE CHAPPELLE’S LATEST NETFLIX SPECIAL REJECTED BY LIBERAL CRITICS: ‘TREELY ANGRY AND DISAPPOINTED’
Buteau stated, “I’m manifesting this s— tonight. This is taking over Radio City Music Hall, and I’m going to tell everybody that I want to make millions and millions of dollars to make people feel safe, seen, safe, heard, and entertained.”
In an interview with USA Today on the special, Buteau also addressed Chappelle’s comments and emphasized the importance of supporting the community.
“I’m not saying you can’t say things — I’m just saying, ‘Can you make it funny?’ Because it doesn’t seem funny,” Buteau added. “You’re hurting people and making them dangerous. And it’s not just Chappelle — it’s a part of the culture that I don’t understand.
“When people say, ‘We can’t do what we used to do.’ Yes! Slavery used to be legal, sometimes we have to move forward, and I’m sorry if it’s different, but wrap your little mind around it.”
In 2021, Chappelle got into hot water with the left over transgender jokes in his Netflix special, “The Closer.” Trans activists called on Netflix to drop the program, as well as a small group of Netflix employees organized a walk in protest.
In 2023, he continued to create jokes about transgender people in his special “The Dreamer,” when he recounted visiting Jim Carrey on the set of his 1999 film, “The Man on the Moon.”

Carrey took a “methodical” approach to portraying the real-life comedian Andy Kaufman by remaining in character throughout, and Chappelle was told by the crew to address Carrey as “Andy” when he met him.
“I wanted to meet Jim Carrey and I had to pretend that this f—er was Andy Kaufman all afternoon. And he was obviously Jim Carrey. I could look at him and I could see that he was Jim Carrey,” he remarked. “Anyway, I’m saying all that to say that’s how I feel about trans people.”
