DANNY DANON: The UN has failed Gaza. It’s time for a new era

It’s time to deal with the uncomfortable truth. UNRWA-Gaza he has monumentally failed the people of Gaza. It has failed in its original mandate to educate the people of Gaza and help, not hinder, peace. And, as a UN agency, it has become overrun with terrorism.
Instead of focusing on education, health care and social services, UNRWA-Gaza has been exposed, offering aid – and cover – to Hamas, an internationally recognized terrorist organization, while working hand-in-hand with their diplomatic proxy, the Palestinian Authority. . Together, they perpetuate a virulent hatred of Jews, glorify violence, and prolong the conflict.
UNRWA was founded in 1949, one year after the establishment of the State of Israel. While refugees around the world relied on temporary assistance from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Palestinians had their own agency. But this unique agency was not created to solve the problem, but to preserve it. UNRWA has cemented the status of Palestinians as permanent refugees and ensured that generations remain trapped in hatred and rejection.
Palestinian hatred of Israelis and Jews did not arise in a vacuum. Systematic indoctrination of hatred it starts in the classroom. Here is an excerpt from a fifth-grade textbook taught in schools funded and supported by the UN and its member states: “Dalal Mughrabi, a name etched in glory, led by unparalleled courage. Her operation brought pride to the Palestinian cause, reminding us that the blood of martyrs paves the path to liberation We teach our children in her footsteps to aspire to heroism and martyrdom, because these are the signs of the strength of a nation.”
The ‘operation’ reported here was no noble cause – and Mughrabi was no hero. She was a Palestinian terrorist with innocent bloody hands, who planned the 1978 Tel Aviv Coast Road massacre that killed 38 innocent Israeli civilians, including 13 children.
UNRWA did not teach peace. It also failed to promote peace. Its schools and facilities have been turned into weapons depots and launch pads for rocket attacks on Israeli civilian centers.
Last year, Israel exposed hundreds of UNRWA employees working as Hamas operatives, and vice versa. But the UN remains silent on this revolving door of terror.
Even worse, UNRWA-Gaza has blood on its hands, and the world has turned a blind eye to it because that blood is Jewish. Last month I had the honor and privilege of being a companion Ayelet Samerano at the UN and stood by her side as she spoke about her dear son Yonatan.
On October 7, the darkest day in Israel’s history, Yonatan was abducted from southern Israel to Gaza by UNRWA workers cashing checks signed and sealed by the United Nations and the UNRWA High Commissioner.

To date, there has been no apology, no explanation, no condemnation from the UN as to why its employees are participating in brutal terrorism instead of fulfilling their mandate of providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
Why does the United Nations and its members continue to support such outrageous terrorist acts? Where is the outrage at UNRWA and its staff violating the basic principles of UN peacekeeping?
Despite what some international bodies claim, UNRWA is neither the largest – nor the most critical – humanitarian agency operating in Gaza. The people of Gaza do not need UNRWA to prosper. Other agencies, not infiltrated by Hamas and genuinely focused on improving the lives of Gazans, have achieved more in improving conditions in Gaza. In the past three months, the World Food Program was responsible for 50% of humanitarian aid in Gaza, while UNRWA was responsible for less than 13%.

Now is the time for change. It is time for the UN to disband UNRWA and stop being a collaborator in conflict to start being a partner in peace.
If the international community really cared about the people of Gaza, it would support steps to establish alternative agencies to replace them UNRWA activities in Gaza.
