Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser described what she described as a “future” and “frank” meeting with President-elect Donald Trump during an interview with MSNBC on Saturday.
“You are right that it is a city Washington, DCcapital, has a different relationship with the president of the United States than any other city in America,” Bowser said. “I’ve had the privilege of working now, this will be my third transition with the president and my second with Donald Trump.”
MSNBC host and former RNC chairman Michael Steele asked Bowser about what D.C. residents can expect from the president-elect ahead of his inauguration day and how she did at the meeting, noting that the two have had a rather contentious relationship. during Trump’s first term.
“And I would characterize it as a perspective meeting, where we talked about things that are important for the county and for him in his second term. I think it was sincere. I think it was an equalization, and we are looking forward to working on those common priorities,” Bowser said.

MSNBC anchor Symone Sanders-Townsend said it was not a contentious meeting, and noted that the pair also discussed crime.
“I would say it was like any other meeting you would expect between two leaders who have constituents who want to move the city and the nation forward. It wasn’t a quick meeting either. It wasn’t rushed. I’d say we were there between 45 minutes and an hour,” Bowser explained.
After their meeting, Bowser said in a statement that she hoped to find a common language.
“I am optimistic that we will continue to find common ground with the president during his second term, and we look forward to supporting a successful inauguration on January 20,” she added.

Trump and Bowser clashed in the summer of Trump’s first term, specifically during the George Floyd riot.
Bowser said the District of Columbia will officially recognize a section of the street leading to the White House that was daubed with “Defund the Police” by protesters. as “Black Lives Matter Plaza” in 2020
Bowser and Trump have also sparred publicly over the use of federal law enforcement to quell the riots and protests that have gripped the capital, as well as other US cities.

Additionally, Trump criticized the proposal 2020 to change national monuments. The proposal was made by a group tasked by the DC mayor to find schools, parks, monuments, statues and buildings named after historical figures they believe represent an oppressive or racist history.
