Chelsea coach Maresca defends goalkeeper Sanchez after the latest error

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca defended goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez after his latest error cost Wolves a goal in the Blues’ 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

Sanchez headed the corner to the feet of Matt Doherty who headed in to equalize after Tosin had put Chelsea ahead.

The former Brighton goalkeeper has now made four mistakes that have led to goals in the Premier League this season, only Ipswich Town’s Arijanet Muric (5) has made more in the competition.

Maresca said: “You said it was the fourth mistake [leading to a goal]? OK, and how many times did he save us? More than four. So there is no problem.

“It happens. Mistakes happen to him, forwards, midfielders. He’s fine.”

Chelsea signed a contract with Filip Jorgensen last summer, and Kepa and Đorđe Petrović are on loan to Bournemouth and Strasbourg.

Chelsea haven’t won in the Premier League since mid-December but wrapped up the win thanks to second-half goals from Marco Cucurella and Noni Madueke.

Maresca was pleased with how his side responded to Sanchez’s mistake to end a five-match winless streak.

“For the first 40 minutes we were on top,” he said. “The performance was excellent and we dominated the game. We scored and created many more chances.

“Then, in the last five minutes of the half, what happened in the last five games happened again.

“Wolves had a bit of confidence and got their goal, then we started to struggle a bit. We started the second half quite well, and then after the second and third goals we were in control.”
