Chelsea are in talks to sign a “gem” who could usurp Jackson & Mudryk
Chelsea they have scored only four goals in their last five Premier League games, he scored three of those four goals Cole Palmerand the second was a free kick by the club captain, Reece James.
While Nicholas Jackson he started the season well, scoring nine goals and four assists in 21 games playedthere have been dry spells (including this current five game streak) for the forward. Despite the brilliant all-round play the 23-year-old provides, he has still managed to miss some important chances this season, again costing the Blues on some occasions.
This has led many fans to call for another power forward option alongside Jackson, perhaps one that can offer something different off the bench. With the January window open, Chelsea’s directors could definitely achieve that this month.
Chelsea’s search for a striker
According to reports BILDChelsea are keen on Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel and have already made contact with the player’s camp. On the other hand, Bayern Munich are interested in Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku, which could cause a negative effect.
The 19-year-old can play as a striker, but also as a winger (both sides), and he has most often received minutes as a left winger for the German giants in his limited chances so far. Last campaign, Tel he made 41 appearances under Thomas Tuchelhe scored ten goals, provided six assists and played a total of 1,406 minutes, making 24 out of 41 appearances on the left side.
He only has a phone he has made 12 appearances so far this season under new manager Vincent Kompanyand has yet to score or assist in his 351 minutes played.
How does Tel compare to Nicolas Jackson
As mentioned earlier, Jackson has had a strong start to the season, with Maresca taking a liking to the Senegalese international for his qualities on the ball (aside from scoring goals), along with his off-the-ball movement and work rate to help the team’s overall play both in possession and outside of it.
Tel is an option who could play as that centre-forward for Chelsea, in a similar way to Jackson, dropping deep and playing alongside Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernández in a pentagon-shaped midfield (with Moises Caiceda and one of their rotating full-backs, usually in at the foot of the midfield), but also run behind and get into the box to finish off chances.

When you compare Jackson’s and Tel’s metrics (from last season, as it gives a better understanding with a better sample size of minutes played), you can see that Tel actually ranks a little more clinically with a goals-to-shot ratio of 0.17, compared to Jackson’s ratio 0.16. This also takes into account that Tel has slightly more shots per 90, with 3.75 shots per 90 compared to Jackson’s 3.33.
Despite being slightly shorter (6ft tall compared to Jackson who is 6ft 1cm), the 19-year-old also wins more aerial duels than Jackson at 1.05 compared to his 0.58, which is an important metric for analysis when looking at an alternative striker option for the Senegal international.
One area the Blues will know they can improve on is making sure they utilize their creative quality in the likes of Palmer, Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho and Enzo Fernández, all of whom can provide brilliant crosses and long balls into the box.
Having a forward who can add aerial power would give Maresca another offensive tool to utilize on his side, while potentially usurping Jackson in the near future.
Comparison Mykhailo Mudryk vs Mathys Tel
But Tel is not only an attacking option. As mentioned earlier, he has played more of his games for Bayern on the left under Tuchel, showing his versatility and how his skills can translate to different areas of the pitch.
Comparisons to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Cody Gakpo come to mind, with a taller winger who can play as a centre-forward, using his goalscoring instincts and physicality/athleticism to get forward.
Being right-footed, this allows Telo to come inside and strike on his stronger foot, something that has already become a trademark for him at such a young age with his excellent ball-striking. Another example of this would be Kylian Mbappe, who has played as both a left winger and a striker, but likes to cut in from the left, often getting into his best shooting zones from that position.

One weak area for Tel as a winger is his lack of range when it comes to crosses, often opting for forced crosses into the box, rather than a series of chipped/punched attempts alongside them. It’s similar with his key passes, they are often similar compared to the more creative range, especially when you consider how technically creative Tel is when dribbling and shooting.
The phone is marked as “an absolute gem” Jacek Kulig, praising the youngster’s performance at such a young age for Bayern. His mix of pace and strength allows him to be an exhaust valve on the wing, while also having the quality to roam inside, link up play and get high volume shots, he looks like a goal-scoring winger.
Whether Tel plays more as a striker or as a left-wing option, the 19-year-old addition would certainly equip Maresca with another option different from what they already have, allowing changes to be made to impact games earlier.
