In a significant development for the Afghanistan cricket team, the legendary Pakistani cricketer has been appointed as the mentor for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the news on Wednesday (January 8), stating that Younis Khan will join their men’s squad ahead of the tournament scheduled to take place in Pakistan and the UAE.
Mentoring role
Younis Khan, known for his exceptional batting skills and leadership, brings a wealth of experience to the Afghanistan side. He was previously Afghanistan’s batting coach in 2022 and is respected for his contribution to cricket. During his illustrious career, Younis scored more than 10,000 runs in Test matches and played a key role in leading Pakistan to their maiden victory in the T20 World Cup in 2009. His expertise will be invaluable as Afghanistan prepare for the prestigious tournament.
ACB statement
Sayeed Naseem Sadat, ACB spokesperson, expressed his delight at Younis’ appointment, noting his vast knowledge of the game and ability to inspire young players.
“ACB has appointed former experienced top player of Pakistan Younis Khan as mentor for Champions Trophy 2025. He will join the team before the start of the competition in Pakistan.” Sadat was quoted on Cricbuzz.
“We believe his leadership will help our team be at its best during the Champions Trophy,” he added.
