Caroline Dubois is ‘immature’ and ignoring me, says world title challenger Jessica Camara | Boxing news
Caroline Dubois knows exactly what she wants for her birthday on Saturday.
In her first world title defense, WBC lightweight champion Dubois takes on Jessica Camara, to live on Sky Sportsand she doesn’t just want to beat the Canadian, she wants to win by knockout.
A long-distance finish is what they will be aiming for in their clash at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield.
“It’s my birthday, so a nice little present for myself,” said Dubois, who turns 24 today (January 11). Sky Sports.
“She’s game. She’s going to try. She’s going to come, give it her all. She’s going to throw everything at me. But I’ll be able to take it and give it back.”
Dubois puts his world title belt on the line on the same bill which sees an exciting clash between British and Commonwealth super middleweight champions Callum Simpson and Steed Woodall
Camara, a seasoned professional, warned Dubois. “She’s looking past me. She’s looking away from me,” said the Canadian Sky Sports. “Honestly, I have more experience in the pros and I feel like I’m more mature. She’s immature. She doesn’t see the task at hand. She doesn’t really look at it.
“It’s a big mistake. She’ll see.”
The Canadian is confident that she can hand over Dubois when they fight. “I believe in myself. I’ve put in the effort. I’ve had a good but tough career. I’ve taken on a lot of challenges and I feel like I have what it takes to beat Carolina,” Camara said.
“She’s a great fighter. I respect her a lot, but she’s not super-human. She’s beatable and I believe I can do it.
“I believe I have what it takes to adapt in a fight and pull off an upset.
“I’m confident in my abilities. I’m confident in my skills. I feel strong. I believe in myself.”
Camara’s record is four losses in her career, but she has notable victories, including a victory over Hyun Mi Choi, a former world champion, in Korea last year.
Dubois, however, rejected it.
“It’s fine. I’ve never judged Choi. I feel like a lot of people know what Choi is about, she’s so inactive. She hasn’t fought in a year. She’s been chasing other things and her mind has been all over the place,” said the Brit .
“Jessica had a chance to do that. I’m sure Choi underestimated Jessica.
“It doesn’t mean anything to me because I, in my opinion, would have stopped Choi.
“All I know is – I’m going to give her everything I’ve got and we’ll see. I know I’m going to win this fight. It’s just a matter of how I’m going to do it.”
‘This shows I’m serious’
Opening of the live broadcast that starts at 7:30 p.m Sky Sports’ main event and Sky Sports+will be Sam Hickey.
A star amateur boxer from Scotland, Hickey is going into just his second professional fight.
But he already takes on an ambitious opponent. Hickey will box Lewis Howells. A Wales international himself as an amateur, Howells has lost once as a professional, but that came against a good undefeated fighter, Kyran Jones.
Hickey accepts the challenge. “That says I’m really serious about the sport, doesn’t it? There’s not a lot of boxers who do that in their second fight,” said the middleweight Sky Sports.
“Obviously I come from a good amateur pedigree, but that just shows what I’m about. I want to fight guys who come to win and I think that’s going to work for me.
“The guy’s decent enough, but if he wants to win, he’d rather walk to the punches than a guy on a motorcycle.”
Hickey was an impressive British boxer, winning a bronze medal at the European Championships and gold at the Commonwealth Games. Withdrawing from the Olympics in his weight class prevented Hickey from qualifying for Paris 2024.
The Scot plans to defeat Howells and pursue further opportunities as a professional.
“Every fighter is dangerous,” Hickey said. “I don’t want to mess around. I’m here. It’s a job. I have to put on a good performance and get people talking about me.
“Where I want to get in boxing – I have to beat guys like this. It’s good to test myself against someone like this so early in my career.
“There will be a lot of people watching, hopefully a lot of Scots. I’m looking forward to it.”
