Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau will resign on Monday, reports The Globe and Mail By Investing.com
Investing.com- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation by Monday, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, amid growing pressure from his party to resign.
The Globe and Mail cited three unnamed sources for the report, saying Trudeau’s departure will come before a key Liberal caucus meeting on Wednesday. It was not clear whether Trudeau would remain prime minister until a new leader was chosen.
Trudeau’s potential departure comes amid growing calls from the Liberal Party for his resignation, with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland recently resigning over policy disagreements.
Recent polls have shown that the Liberal Party is also set for a crushing defeat by the Conservatives in the October 2025 election.
Trudeau’s resignation is also expected to fuel growing calls for early elections, which will elect an administration to deal with US President Donald Trump for the next four years.
A Globe and Mail report says Trudeau has discussed having Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc step in as interim prime minister, though that won’t be possible if LeBlanc also continues Trudeau’s leadership of the Liberal Party.
